When should I call for help?

If you or a group member are seriously injured or just not coping with the environment you find yourselves in then call for help.

Who do I call?

The following questions are designed to help you if you are unsure whether to make the call


  • Do you have map and compass and can you use them?
  • Is it safe to explore the terrain and locate yourself?
    • Steep ground?
    • Avalanche conditions?
  • Do you think the weather will ease and give better visibility?
  • Are you equipped to wait for better conditions?
  • Are you physically and mentally coping with the conditions?

Injured or Sick Group Member

  • Can they walk?
  • Do you think it is a minor or major injury?
  • Would walking make the injury or medical condition worse?
  • Do they have a medical condition that is getting worse?
  • Are you physically and mentally coping with the conditions?
