DESCRIPTION:Aim: \nTo enable students to further understand the issues and hazards associated in working on\, near and in water and to undertake a suitable rescue response. \nCourse Content: \n\nUse of PFD / Life Jacket\nThrowline Characteristics\nThrowline Practical\nSwimming Skills Defensive and Aggressive swimming techniques\nRescue from Water\nLimitations of Training\nIdentification of hazards in the water environment\nRisk mitigation\nHydrology: Still water & River\nSafety measures when working near water.\nPhysiology effects of cold-water entry\nPhysiology of drowning\nEmergency action planning\nLow risk rescue options\nHierarchy of rescues\nRescue equipment – throwbags\, wading poles and reach rescue system.\nAquatic PPE including drysuit user’s induction\, lifejackets\, and buoyancy aids.\nWading – individual & group\nFlood environment considerations\nCo-worker rescues from the bank\nAccidental Immersion – Defensive & aggressive swimming in the event of an accidental immersion\nHealth and welfare\nMedical considerations\nContamination\nScene management\nHydrology and associated hazards\nCorrect use of PPE\nSelf-Rescue\nUse of rescue equipment including lines\, reach poles.\nMovement in Shallow water\nCasualty Management\nCommunication systems\n\nOutcomes: \nAfter successful completion of the course\, the student will have a firm foundation of knowledge and skills and should be able to: \n\nWithin a range of water environments\, assess the influences and apply processes to establish suitable dynamic risk assessment.\nInterpret the impact of water flow\, hazards such as stoppers\, in-water obstacles\, mud\, ice\, etc.\nAssess those at risk\, risk areas and influence of environmental issues\, temperature\, wind\, rainfall\, hazmat\, etc.\nApply safe working practices and understand the issues surrounding choice and application of PPE\, skills’ maintenance\, and development issues.\nAnalyse the issues of shallow water crossings\, use of appropriate lines and evacuation procedures.\n\nAccommodation:\nAccommodation will be provided at Glenmore Lodge \nPlease note that an evening meal on Friday evening will not be provided. \nIncluded is Saturday breakfast\, lunch and dinner and Sunday breakfast and lunch. \n  \nThe course and What to Bring:\nAll PPE kit will be provided with the exception of an old pair of boots. \nFull details of the course will be sent out in advance of the course running. \nEssentially it will run from 2000hrs on Friday through to late Sunday afternoon.
