Scottish Mountain Rescue Annual Review 2025

27th March, 2026

Scottish Mountain Rescue has released its Annual Review for 2025.

The Annual Review covers the year 2025 and looks at the work of the volunteer rescue teams, highlighting team member profiles, rescue stories, as well as milestones that have been reached over the course of the year.

Scottish Mountain Rescue Chair for 2025, Donald MacRae said:

As I reflect on the year, I am struck by the immense care and enduring professionalism shown by our volunteers across Scotland. They head into environments others would walk away from, leaving loved ones and special occasions behind to offer hope to families in crisis.

Whilst we naturally focus on those we help, it is also important to acknowledge the sacrifices our families make in supporting us. Without that support, we could not function. I would like to offer a heartfelt thank you to all our families, and to the fundraisers and donors whose generosity allows this vital work to continue.

This year’s Annual Review reflects the continued commitment of Scottish Mountain Rescue (SMR)’s 850 volunteers and teams throughout Scotland. In 2025, SMR member teams responded to a record-breaking 1,270 call-outs including ‘continuations’ – linked call-outs over several days. Mountain Rescue team members gave up 39,229 hours of their time responding to call-outs alone and helped 901 people.

The full statistics report will follow in April.
