Distinguished Service Award for John Peden

01st April, 2026

Scottish Mountain Rescue recently presented John Peden of Oban Mountain Rescue Team (MRT) with a Distinguished Service Award for his outstanding contribution over 25 years with Oban MRT, including his role in founding the team.

John was chair of Oban MRT from its formation in 2001 until 2016. He was one of the main driving forces in setting up Oban MRT when Strathclyde Police identified a gap in MR coverage in the north Argyll and Islands area. John ensured that Oban MRT was legally compliant and supported by appropriate policies and procedures, he also then supported the first 3 team leaders Oban MRT had between 2001 and 2016. He remains an active team member and callout manager and still gives most a run for their money on the descents. Nationally John was equipment officer for SMR from 2016-2018 and provided a measured voice at a time where SMR was in a state of transition.

Scottish Mountain Rescue say:

“John’s vision and determination were instrumental in establishing Oban Mountain Rescue Team and ensuring it developed on strong foundations. His continued service and contribution at a national level have made a significant difference to Mountain Rescue in Scotland. We thank him for his outstanding commitment over many years.”
