Meet Our Supporters – Shelley, Miles for SMR

09th May, 2022

Why did you decide to take part in Miles for SMR?

I decided to take part in miles for SMR as I spend a lot of time in the Scottish Mountains. Although I’ve been fortunate enough not to need to call on Mountain Rescue Teams, I recognise that they provide a vital and life-saving service and that they are heavily reliant on charitable donations and sponsors… I just wanted to give a little back to the hundreds of volunteers who go out of their way to ensure folk like myself can rely on such a service.

What distance did you choose and how are you planning to complete the miles?

I chose the 165 mile distance, a mile for every rescue call out in a year. I’ll be hillwalking, walking my local area, and cycling a few miles too…

How are you going to start? Where are you first miles going to be?

My first miles were an ascent of Binnein Mor and Na Gruagaichean up at Kinlochleven on May 1st… Fabulous hills, great views and 9 miles to kick off the challenge!

What are you most looking forward to about the challenge?

I’m most looking forward to getting out on the hills, and pushing myself to get a bit fitter after a slow start to the year (whilst hopefully raising some much needed funds for SMR!).

What do you think will be the hardest part of taking part?

The hardest part will be fitting the miles in around my rotating shift pattern at work, motivating myself to get out after my nightshift week will be particularly hard!
