Avalanche Companion training courses

Avalanche Companion training courses

09th January, 2023

Scottish Mountain Rescue ran two successful Avalanche Companion courses at the weekend for team members from all over Scotland – 29 volunteers from across 13 teams. We shared our knowledge, top tips and enjoyed discussions around best practise in companion rescue.

Topics covered included Be Avalanche Aware 3 by 3 model (Weather and Avalanche Forecast & Understanding, Me and My Team and The Terrain), as well as Planning, Our Journey and Key Places.

For more information on this go to www.sais.gov.uk.

The courses also covered understanding the workings of a transceiver (strengths and weaknesses).  Transceiver tests ran on the transceiver park at Glenmore Lodge before heading off to the hill (and snow) to put it all into practice, as were probing, shovelling and extraction techniques.

Saturday’s group went into Coire an t-Sneachda and Sunday’s group, contending with with gale force winds, had a longer morning at Glenmore Lodge and headed to snow patches near Coire Na Ciste car park in the afternoon.

Thanks to everyone for two great courses.
